Indirect Calorimeter
Support
GEMNutrition provides support, maintenance and calibration services
for the GEM Indirect Calorimeter.
The
GEM (Gas Exchange Measurement) continues to be used by many leading
Universities and Nutritional Research institutions in the UK and
throughout the world looking at human energy measurement and
metabolism.
GEMNutrition will keep your valued GEM in peak operational condition
for many years to come.
Calibration tests and checks are also required periodically to
ensure accurate measurements of Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR),
Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), Volume of Oxygen (VO2) Volume of
Carbon Dioxide (VCO2) and Respiratory Quotient (RQ)., GEMNutrition
offer a ‘fixed price’ calibration service to ensure stable accurate
readings.
We
provide an on-call service to suit your needs that can be planned in
advance.
Alternatively we can arrange for your GEM to be returned to our
extensive facilities at Daresbury for a complete refurbishment,
calibration and test examination.
Additionally if you are looking to for new Indirect Calorimetry
systems, we will assist you to secure the appropriate specification
and system.
Indirect Calorimetry
An
indirect calorimeter is a device that calculates a person’s resting
energy expenditure (REE). It does this by measuring the volume of
oxygen (VO2) and volume of carbon dioxide (VCO2) as a person
breathes in and out. A person gets their energy by oxidising food;
by measuring the amount of oxygen used during this process it
possible to calculate Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR).
An
important point of measuring both Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide is that
this enables the calculation of the Respiratory Quotient (RQ) which
is an indicator of the energy source that the body is using (e.g.
Fat or Carbohydrate) and is a key clinical parameter.
